Mangonada!!!!

This week I tried a Mangonada at our Branch President's Paleteria and it is the best thing ever!!! Have you ever tried one? It's made of mango and chile. My life will never be the same now that I've tried it!!!  It's like a drink but it also has chunks of mangos in it. I'll take a picture of it today when I go get one. I literally did not like mangos until I tried a mangonada. 

I am definitely eating better than I thought I would! I don't know if I told you already but Hna Guzman also made us this drink made from something called Guanabana and it was super good. 

There's lots of pollen in the air, so you know what that means....allergies!!! Yay!!! I've been a little sick all week but it's all good!!!

So we have a new investigator named Alejandra and she seems really solid. She was a referral from a member and she already owned the Joseph Smith movie that some missionaries gave her, and recently she sat down and watched it with her kids, so we are thinking she is ready!!

We had a lesson scheduled with Gabriel yesterday, but he was sick. We were so sad. We really feel like him and his family are ready for the gospel but the adversary is going to try his best to stop them from hearing the gospel.

I have a question. In Preach My Gospel it says that Jesus Christ created the earth. In the Bible it says God created the earth. So the rest of the world thinks it was God, but we know that God created the earth through Jesus Christ. So the way I think of it is that God created the "blueprints" and Christ created the actual earth. The points is, why is it important that we know that it was Christ who created the earth and not God? 

We have been teaching a few recent converts, and I really enjoy their lessons. Basically we just re-teach them the 5 missionary discussions. It's interesting that we have to teach each of them according to their needs. They each need different teaching styles. I know that God knows each of these people personally and it's so fun to be able to receive revelation as to how to teach these children of God.

My favorite scripture this week was Proverbs 31:10 "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." I used this scripture during our lesson on the Law of Chastity with a recent convert, and it went well. I know that if we follow Heavenly Father's commandments we will be blessed and kept from harm. I truly want to be virtuous so that my future can be bright.

¡Mangonada!

La semana pasada probé una mangonada en la paletería del presidente de la rama, ¡y es la cosa más deliciosa que pueda haber! ¿La han probado? Se hace de mango y lleva chile. ¡Mi vida nunca será la misma ahora que ya la probé! Es una bebida, pero lleva trocitos de mango. Cuando me tome una hoy le voy a tomar una foto. Antes los mangos no me gustaban en lo absoluto hasta que probé la mangonada.

Es un hecho que estoy comiendo mucho mejor de lo que pensé. También, no sé si ya les conté, pero la Hna. Guzmán nos hizo una bebida de algo que se llama guanábana y estaba súper buena.

Por otra parte, el ambiente se está llenando de polen y ya saben lo que eso implica… ¡alergia! ¡Ay! Toda la semana he estado enferma, pero nada serio.

También tenemos una nueva investigadora que se llama Alejandra y la cosa pinta bien con ella. Ella fue una referencia de un miembro y ya tenía una película sobre José Smith que otros misioneros le regalaron. Entonces hace poco se puso a verla con sus hijos y nos parece que podría estar lista.

También ayer teníamos una cita con Gabriel, pero se enfermó. Nos entristeció porque nos parece que él y su familia están listos para el Evangelio, pero el adversario hará todo lo que pueda para impedir que lo escuchen.

Tengo una pregunta: En Predicad Mi Evangelio dice que Jesucristo creó la tierra. En la Biblia dice que fue Dios el que la creó. Así que el resto del mundo cree que fue Dios, pero sabemos que Él la creó por medio de Jesucristo. Entonces, lo que pienso es que Dios hizo los “planos” y que fue Cristo el que en realidad hizo la obra. A lo que quiero llegar es: ¿Por qué es importante que sepamos que fue Cristo el que creó la tierra y no Dios?

Hemos estado enseñando a unos cuantos nuevos conversos y disfruto mucho de las charlas. Lo que hacemos en sí es volver a dar las cinco charlas misionales. Lo interesante es que las tenemos que enseñar de acuerdo con las necesidades de cada persona, ya que cada una necesita que se le enseñe con un estilo diferente. Sé que Dios conoce de forma individual a cada una de esas personas y es bien lindo recibir revelación en cuanto a la forma de enseñar a cada uno de Sus hijos.

Mi versículo favorito de esta semana fue Proverbios 31:10 “Mujer virtuosa, ¿quién la hallará? Porque su valor sobrepasa grandemente al de las piedras preciosas”. Lo utilicé durante una charla que le dimos a una reciente conversa sobre la ley de castidad y estuvo muy bien. Sé que si seguimos los mandamientos de nuestro Padre Celestial seremos bendecidos y nos alejaremos del peligro. Yo verdaderamente quiero ser virtuosa para que mi futuro sea brillante.

Placentero nos es trabajar

Yesterday we were finally able have a good discussion with a former investigator who we've been trying to talk to for a while. His name is Gabriel and he is so awesome! He was talking to us about his family and so I felt inspired to leave him a pass-along card with a picture of the Salt Lake temple on it, and he said that back in Mexico City, when he was young he would hang out on the temple grounds of the Mexico City temple. And he has been to the visitor center there before. And he remembered a little bit about Joseph Smith, too, so we are so excited to teach him because he seems really solid!!

One hymn that only exists in the Spanish hymnbook is "Placentero nos es trabajar" and I really like it since it's a good one for missionary work.

Yesterday we had a regional conference which was broadcast from Salt Lake City. It was so so so good! I loved every talk. I especially loved Elder Dale G. Renlund. He talked about how whenever someone would ask him and his wife a question like, "Why don't you drink coffee?" or any question about our church and she would be like, "In 1820 there was a young man named Joseph Smith..." and she would tell the story of the First Vision, and then explain that we believe in revelation. S Elder Renlund explained that if we only talk about health when it comes to the Word of Wisdom for example, then our explanation will be lacking. Everything ties back to the fact that we believe in modern revelation; God reveals His doctrine to His prophets, and Joseph Smith was the first in these latter-days. Every missionary here was like, "That is so brilliant!!"

We've been visiting a less active family, and the father told us that he has felt prompted to come back to church. So we had a really awesome lesson about the Holy Ghost and how we will be blessed when we heed the revelation that we receive. Sadly we didn't seem him at church this Sunday but we will keep on trying to get him to come. 

The members here are the best! They give us so much food, and Hna. Guzman gave us toothpaste and shampoo, too. She is so great, she told us that she found a flaw in the show "Dora the Explorer" because Dora always asks questions three times: "Where is the fox? Where is the fox? Where is the fox?" And Hna Guzman is like, that's why my kids don't answer me until I repeat myself three times.

We played this fun game titled "Princess or Prophet?" where there were quotes from Disney movies and quotes from the apostles, and we had to guess whether the quotes came from Disney or the apostles. It was actually a pretty hard game, haha, I only got half of them right.

Speaking of Disney, yes Papi, Sister Rodas and I are like Timon and Pumbaa, we lay on our backs like them and talk about deep concepts. I am Timon. "What do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the hula?"

Ayer por fin pudimos tener una buena charla con un muchacho que ha investigado la Iglesia antes y con el que habíamos querido hablar por un tiempo. Se llama Gabriel y es muy buena onda. Nos habló de su familia y eso me dio la inspiración de darle una tarjeta con la foto del Templo de Salt Lake, y nos contó que cuando era chico a veces iba a pasar el rato a los jardines del Templo de la Ciudad de México. También mencionó que ha estado en el centro de visitantes y que recordaba algo de José Smith, así que eso nos anima a seguir enseñándole porque se ve que es una persona fuerte.

El himno “Placentero nos es trabajar” solo existe en español y me gusta mucho porque tiene mucho que ver con la obra misional.

También ayer tuvimos una conferencia regional que se transmitió desde Salt Lake City y estuvo muy pero muy buena. Me encantaron todos los discursos. En particular me encantó lo que dijo el élder Dale G. Renlund. Dijo que siempre que a él y a su esposa alguien les hace preguntas como: “¿Y ustedes por qué no toman café?”, o preguntas de ese tipo sobre la Iglesia, su esposa responde algo así: “En 1820, un joven que se llamaba José Smith…”, luego cuenta el relato de la Primera Visión y entonces explica que nosotros creemos en la revelación.  Después, el élder Renlund explicó que, si solo nos concentramos en hablar de la salud al tocar el tema de la Palabra de Sabiduría, nuestra explicación se quedará corta. Todo se relaciona con el hecho de que creemos en la revelación moderna, que Dios revela Su doctrina a Sus profetas y que José Smith fue el primer profeta de los últimos días. Al escuchar ese concepto todos los misioneros dijimos: “¡Eso está buenísimo!”.

También hemos estado visitando a una familia que es menos activa y el papá nos dijo que ha sentido la impresión de que tiene que regresar a la Iglesia. Así que tuvimos una charla muy buena con ellos sobre el Espíritu Santo y de la forma en que somos bendecidos al hacer caso a las revelaciones que recibimos. Lo triste fue que no lo vimos en la Iglesia este domingo pero seguiremos intentando hacerlo venir.

¡Los miembros de por acá son buenísima onda! Nos dan mucho de comer y la Hna. Guzmán nos regaló pasta de dientes y shampoo. Ella es muy linda. También nos dijo que hay una fallita en el programa de “Dora la exploradora” porque Dora cada vez que pregunta algo lo repite tres veces: “¿Donde está el zorro?”, “¿Donde está el zorro?”, “¿Donde está el zorro?”. Entonces dice que por eso sus hijos no le contestan sino hasta que repite las cosas tres veces.

El otro día jugamos un juego bien divertido que se llama “¿Lo dijo una princesa o un profeta?”. Consiste en que te leen frases de películas de Disney y frases de apóstoles, y uno tiene que adivinar si viene de una película o de un apóstol. La cosa es que es bastante difícil y yo solo puede adivinar como la mitad de ellas.

Hablando de Disney, pues, sí papi, la Hna. Rodas y yo nos ponemos a filosofar sobre temas profundos tiradas en el suelo viendo para arriba como Timón y Pumba.  Yo soy Timón: “¿Y qué quieres que haga, que me vista de mujer y baile hula hula?” (De la película “El Rey León”).

Signs follow those that believe - D&C 63:9

Lately in our companionship we have been specifically praying to find people who are ready to be baptized this month. Ever since then we have been getting more referrals! It's been exciting since we are so much more likely to baptize someone who was found by a member than someone we find on our own. 

At our zone meeting on Thursday we discussed Mormon chapter 9 and I felt inspired that I need to have faith that I can participate in miracles. I know that miracles can happen but I lately I haven't had faith that I can make those miracles happen. So that was really great revelation to receive.

A member took us out to eat at Viva Taqueria which was soooo good. I had tacos dorados, or here they are called "flautas." I am totally taking you there some day.

We visited some less-active young women, Candy and Citlali. Citlali has been reading the Book of Mormon more and more ever since we've been visiting her, and she is truly grateful for the love that we have given her. She is so great.

And Candy was finally able to open up to us and be honest. We will help her develop her testimony. I just barely learned that with less-actives it's super smart to re-teach the lessons to them as if they were investigators. That was definitely what helped Candy was when we taught her the Plan of Salvation.

I totally forgot about the Super Bowl until I was at church yesterday. I am so disconnected from the world right now. But it's great! It's so cool to have the opportunity to forget myself and to forget about the world and only worry about the people we go visit.

Doubt Not, Fear Not

Hey look at this awesome collection of scriptures that President Palmer sent us:

“Fear not, for they that be with us are more that they that be with them.” (2 Kings 6:16)

“For the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not: I will help thee.” (Isaiah 41:13)

“Fear not what man can do; for perfect love casteth out all fear.” (Moroni 8:16)

“Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.” (D&C 6:36)

“Fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever.” (D&C 122:9)

“Go thy way and do as I have told you, and fear not thine enemies; for they shall not have power to stop my work.” (D&C 136:17)

Here is what Elder Holland said about "fear not":

"I submit to you that may be one of the Savior’s commandments that is, even in the hearts of otherwise faithful Latter-day Saints, almost universally disobeyed; and yet I wonder whether our resistance to this invitation could be any more grievous to the Lord’s merciful heart. I can tell you this as a parent: As concerned as I would be if somewhere in their lives one of my children were seriously troubled or unhappy or disobedient, nevertheless I would be infinitely more devastated if I felt that at such a time that child could not trust me to help, or should feel his or her interest were unimportant to me or unsafe in my care. In that same spirit, I am convinced that none of us can appreciate how deeply it wounds the loving heart of the Savior of the world when he finds that his people do not feel confident in his care or secure in his hands or trust in his commandments."

Las señales siguen a los que creen, D. y C. 63:9

Últimamente, mis compañeras y yo hemos estado orando para poder encontrar a personas que ya estén listas para bautizarse. Debido a ello, hemos estado recibiendo más referencias. Ha sido emocionante porque es mucho más probable bautizar a una persona que fue referencia de un miembro que a una que nosotras encontramos.

El jueves tuvimos reunión de zona y analizamos el capítulo 9 de Mormón, y sentí la inspiración de que debo tener fe para poder ser parte de un milagro. Sé que los milagros ocurren, pero últimamente no he tenido fe en que puedo ayudar a que ocurran milagros. Así que fue una gran revelación la que recibí.

Un miembro nos llevó a comer a un lugar que se llama Taquería Viva y la comida estuvo buenísima. Yo comí taquitos dorados, que aquí les dicen “flautas”. Definitivamente que un día los tengo que llevar a comer ahí.

También visitamos a dos mujeres jóvenes que son menos activas y se llaman Candy y Citlali. Citlali ha estado leyendo mucho el Libro de Mormón desde que la visitamos y dice que agradece el amor que le mostramos. Ella es muy linda.

Candy, por su parte, finalmente pudo abrirse con nosotras y nos habló con franqueza. La cosa es que le ayudaremos a desarrollar su testimonio. Me acabo de dar cuenta de que lo más inteligente con los menos activos es volverles a dar las charlas como si fueran investigadores. Eso fue lo que a fin de cuentas le sirvió a Candy cuando le enseñamos sobre el Plan de Salvación.

Se me olvidó totalmente que ayer era el Super Bowl. Estoy tan desconectada del mundo en estos momentos. ¡Pero qué bueno! Es muy padre poder olvidarme de mí misma y del mundo, y sólo pensar en la gente a la que tenemos que visitar.

No dudéis; no temáis

Vean esta formidable colección de pasajes de las Escrituras que nos envió el presidente Palmer:

“No tengas miedo, porque son más los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos” (2 Reyes 6:16).

“Porque yo, Jehová, soy tu Dios, quien te sostiene de la mano derecha y te dice: No temas, yo te ayudaré” (Isaías 41:13).

En ese mismo espíritu, estoy convencido de que ninguno de nosotros puede apreciar lo profundamente herido que queda el amoroso corazón del Salvador cuando se da cuenta de que Su pueblo no siente confianza bajo Su cuidado o no siente confianza en Sus mandamientos”.

Basurto?!

Ok so this has been a really long week. 

Hey, what does "basurto" mean? Elder Griffin would say it and I have no idea what it means. I'm thinking he just made it up.

So yesterday we had a really awesome experience. We were walking down a street trying to contact a potential investigator, but he wasn't home so across the street we saw some people and decided to go talk to them. At first one of the ladies was like, "We are really busy, can you come back another time? We're trying to get rid of some mice in our home." So we were like, is there anything we can do to help you? And they agreed! That's so strange to me because, we're just three strangers on the street and they let us into their house to help them catch some mice. So these are two sisters in their 30's who live right next to each other, named Daisy and Elizabeth. After a while there was a mouse caught in their sticky mouse trap, so what we had to do was flip over the mouse trap and I got a broom and smashed the mouse to death. There was blood coming out and Elizabeth said, "Se le salio el mole!" Hahaha. This is one of my favorite experiences I've ever had so far. Daisy and Elizabeth are hilarious, and we will be going back to do more service for them tomorrow.

So we've been trying to encourage hermana Guzman to read the Book of Mormon every day, and she was asking us some questions. She said that she was confused about the Jaredites, because I guess in Spanish it says that the Jaredites left their land via "nave" and she thought that they were leaving via UFO. (Nave means "ship" but it can also mean "space ship.") Hahaha Hermana Rodas and I were dying of laughter when she told us that. She is just the funniest person ever.

It's been so great with Sister Tu'atonga here! This is her last transfer before she goes home, and I get to see her every day now that she's here! I'm so grateful for all of the people I've met on my mission. I know that I was meant to be here. I'm grateful that Heavenly Father prompted me to serve a mission.

Sorry I don't know what else to write! Life is good! Lots of work to do!

Stake conference

Oh yeah!!!

We had stake conference yesterday and it was super good! I really liked the talk given by a member of the Seventy (I'm so sorry but I don't remember his name). He asked why does D&C say to rejoice and then put on the the whole armor of God? Why not rejoice after the victory? It's because if you put on the armor of God, victory is certain!

He also talked about how one time he was sprayed by a skunk right before going to the movie theater, so he showered several times and the stench would not go away, but he went to the theater anyways and everyone sitting close by in the theater would find a new seat far away from him. So he asked the question, "What would happen if our sins had an odor?"

He talked about the scripture in D&C which was "let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly," not periodically. We need to be immersed in light so that the darkness can't find any cracks to come in through.

If we are tired of walking, then run. If you're not solving a problem by walking, run. Overcome the darkness by running from it!

I really needed this talk right now, so I'm so grateful for his remarks.

On Saturday night, President Palmer spoke at stake conference, and he said "If something is important to you, you will find a way. If it's not important you will find an excuse."

¡¿Basurto?!

Pues esta semana se me ha hecho bastante larga.

Por cierto, ¿qué significa “basurto”? El elder Griffin se la pasaba diciendo eso y no tengo idea de lo que quiere decir. Me parece que es invento de él.

Bueno, pero ayer tuvimos una experiencia bien padre. Íbamos por la calle para visitar a una persona a la que tal vez le pudiéramos enseñar, pero no estaba en su casa. Vimos que enfrente había unas personas, así que decidimos ir y hablar con ellas. Al principio, una de las señoras nos dijo el clásico: “Ahorita estamos ocupadas, ¿no podrían regresar otro día? Estamos queriendo matar unos ratones”. Nosotras les respondimos: “¿Les podemos ayudar?”. ¡Y nos aceptaron la ayuda! Eso se me hizo raro, porque éramos tres desconocidas que íbamos por la calle y nos dejaron entrar a su casa para que les ayudáramos con los ratones. Se trata de dos señoras como de treinta y tantos años que viven una junta a la otra, una se llama Daisy y otra Elizabeth. Después de un rato, un ratón se quedó atrapado en una de esas trampas pegajosas. Luego le dimos vuelta y yo agarré una escoba para darle hasta matarlo.  Entonces comenzó a salir sangre y Elizabeth dijo: “¡Se le salió el mole!”. ¡Qué chistoso! Ha sido una de las experiencias favoritas que he tenido hasta ahora. Daisy y Elizabeth son agradables y vamos a regresar mañana para ayudarles con otras cosas.

También hemos estado tratando de animar a la hermana Guzmán a que lea el Libro de Mormón todos los días y ella nos hizo unas preguntas. Nos dijo que estaba confundida en cuanto al tema de los jareditas, porque supongo que en español dice que ellos se fueron de su tierra en sus “naves” y ella creía que se trataba de OVNIS. (Ya que una nave puede ser un barco pero también una nave espacial). Fue chistoso y a la hermana Rodas y a mí nos dio risa cuando nos lo dijo. La hermana es una persona muy graciosa.

¡Ha sido fenomenal estar con la hermana Tu'atonga aquí! Ella ya está en su último cambio y después regresará a su casa, pero lo lindo es que aquí la veo todos los días. Me siento sumamente agradecida por toda la gente que he conocido en la misión. Sé que era aquí donde tenía que estar. Agradezco al Padre Celestial el hecho de haberme hecho sentir que tenía que servir en una misión.

Lo siento, pero no sé que más poner. ¡La vida es linda! ¡Hay mucho qué hacer!

Conferencia de estaca

¡Ah, se me olvidaba!

¡Ayer tuvimos conferencia de estaca y estuvo buenísima! Me gustó mucho un discurso que dio un Setenta (perdón, pero no me acuerdo de su nombre). Preguntó por qué en Doctrina y Convenios dice que primero nos debemos regocijar y luego ponernos toda la armadura de Dios. ¿Por qué no regocijarse después de lograr la victoria? La respuesta es que, si nos ponemos la armadura de Dios, por seguro lograremos la victoria.

También contó que en una ocasión en que iba ir al cine, un zorrillo lo salpicó con su líquido, así que se tuvo que bañar varias veces, pero el olor no se le quitaba. La cosa es que de todos modos se fue al cine y toda la gente que llegaba a sentarse cerca de él de inmediato se levantaba y se iba a sentar a otra parte. Entonces hizo la pregunta: “¿Qué pasaría si nuestros pecados tuvieran olor?”.

También habló de ese versículo de D. y C. que dice: “Deja que la virtud engalane tus pensamientos incesantemente”, y recalcó que no dice periódicamente. Tenemos que estar sumergidos en la luz para que la oscuridad no encuentre grietas por las cuales colarse.
